Internet Safety



Home Internet Safety Checklist
- The computer that my children use for internet access is in a public area of our home
- My children are always supervised when they use the internet
- I have visited and discussed the Peel Regional Police Computer and Internet Safety web site with my children
- My children have been taught to immediately turn off the monitor and tell me if they see anything on the Internet that disturbs them
- I regularly discuss Internet safety with my children
- I have installed Internet filtering software
- I have taught my children the SCAM acronym (below)
- My children understand their Internet responsibilities – especially when using the Internet outside our home

A.L.I.C.E. - Acronym for Parents

A – Alert. Be alert to potential dangers and problems
L – Learn. Learn more about the Internet - ask your children to teach you
I – Involve. Involve yourself. Be a Digital Parent by keeping your fingers in your family’s Internet activities
C – Control. Control content. Discuss, filter. Teach S.C.A.M.
E – Enjoy. Use the Internet as a tool for research and entertainment

S.C.A.M. - Acronym for Students

S – Security. Are there any security issues with your current Internet activity?
C – Credibility. Is the information source or person credible?
A – Accuracy. Is the information accurate? Cross check.
M – Moral Values. Does the Web Site conform with the moral values of your family and society?
