The Importance of Research Skills

It is essential for all students to understand the research process. There are over 50 expectations in the Grade 6, 7, 8 Ontario Curriculum related to research.

Steps in the Research Process

  1. Understand the question.
  2. Decide what information you need to find and how you will organize it.
  3. Search for information and make jot notes. Cite your sources of information.
  4. Organize your information (and notes).
  5. Write the first draft of your project from your notes.
  6. Check that you have answered the question. Edit your work and find additional information if necessary. Have someone else read your draft.
  7. Write a second draft if necessary.
  8. Decide on how you will present your project. (You may have done this in step 2).
  9. Write your final draft.
  10. Create your presentation. Add diagrams, maps and pictures.
  11. Evaluate your own work (compare with a rubric) - check that your completed project answers the original question.
