School Success

2004-2005 School Success Initiatives at The Valleys

The Valleys is committed to developing the whole student and ensuring each student is 'the best they can be'. To develop student success we believe that students need to develop their social skills as well as their literacy skills.

Evaluation of the EQAO data from the Grade 10 literacy test revealed that students needed to be exposed to a variety of text forms and to begin to critically think about what they read. In order to support and extend our students in this area, The Valleys has chosen two main School Success goals for this year:
  1. To develop positive communication skills and social problem solving
  2. To improve reading comprehension of a variety of text forms
We will continue to use The Valleys Values to promote and teach positive communication skills. To improve the reading comprehension of our students we have begun to have a daily fifteen-minute 'literacy moment' for students to read appropriate literature of personal choice, and to be instructed in reading strategies using a variety of different text forms.
